The Delhi District Cricket Association (
DDCA) demolished three toilet complexes in Ferozshah Kotla Stadium on Saturday on instructions from the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC). These illegal toilet complexes were one of the 60 deviations in the building plan that the SDMC had noticed in the stadium.
The DDCA was given 20 days to make 60 structural changes to the stadium on February 9 by the SDMC.
Only on the completion of these changes will the DDCA stand a chance of getting occupancy certificate from the SDMC to hold the T20 World Cup matches starting March 8. The SDMC gave a conditional occupancy certificate to DDCA on Feb 9 after the latter had made a plea in the Delhi High Court asking it to instruct the SDMC to give an occupancy certificate.
The SDMC had also asked DDCA to deposit Rs. 50 lakh. If the DDCA fails to make the required changes by February 29 it has to forfeit the amount to the SDMC. An SDMC official said, "During our inspection we found that the DDCA has completed 80 per cent of the changes that we had asked for. There are toilet complexes outside and inside, some of which had been converted to food stalls and converted back to toilets. We have asked them to demolish them."
The Board of Control For Cricket in India (BCCI) which is the host of the T20 World Cup hasn’t started sales of tickets yet for the want of clearance of this venue by the civic body. Tour operators and fans have been impatiently waiting for BCCI to announce finalisation of venues and booking of tickets.
Leader of the House Ashish Sood said, "The demolition happened on mutual consent. We had given tem conditional certificate keeping in view the importance of the match but safety is our priority."
